NEW YORK, NY - January 25, 2005 - Rand Davis, a Georgetown University
graduate, partially inspired by a campus speech made in 1997 by former
CEO, Bob Holland, of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, regarding the social
responsibility of business, recently launched a new business model
that may have a significant effect on how business is carried out and
its responsibility to the world in which it operates.
Davis' company, The Giving Art Group, has as its core mission,
exchanging design-oriented objects of art to the public in such a way
as to contribute to those organizations striving to make the world a
calmer, saner, more humane place.
"There is tragedy all around us," Davis states, "in the loss suffered
by Tsunami victims in Asia, the losses of hurricane victims in my home
state of Florida, some of whom are still homeless, the less visible
losses such as the millions who suffer everyday from not being able to
read and write in our very own country or the people throughout the
world who die, daily, from inadequate drinking water. I wanted to
create a way where we could collectively stem some of these situations
and help when and where help was needed."
The Giving Art Group allows one to do just that, carrying this message
along an aesthetic line through the introduction of an object of
beauty...allowing the message to land a bit easier and carry a little
bit farther.
As Davis puts it, "Our concept is simple. Americans work hard, work
smart, live well, like to have beautiful things and they deserve them.
But they don't only think of themselves - they also want to help those
who are less fortunate. Our program lets them do both. We help bring
beauty into their lives while also helping those in need."
The Giving Art Group is currently working with an item called the
Lounge Light Candle, an enchanting combination of traditional
candlelight and modern LED technology, emitting a glow from within
that slowly fades through the whole color spectrum. The Lounge Light
was the number one gift item in Germany this last season, and Davis
believes they can use some of this intense interest for good.
The Giving Art Group is currently donating 100 percent of the net
profits on their website, http://www.loungelightusa.com, (with 10
percent off discount top for those who participate,) to those who
enter the code "RELIEF" checkout – all done through the international
relief organization, "CARE" with 50 percent going to help in
rebuilding the lives of those who lost so much during the string of
hurricanes that hit Florida last season.
"Hopefully it can introduce or reinforce a new paradigm of how social
responsibility can be effected," posits Davis, "Socially influencing a
culture by the economics of responsible consumers and corporations -
something by which I've always been inspired. If other companies
would take such efforts we could realize a tremendous economic force
for change."
